When it comes to careers, short folks are getting shortchanged.

So says a recent study at the University of Florida, which concludes tall people earn an average $789 more per year for every inch above average height. Conducted by Tim Judge, a marketing professor, the report will be published in the spring edition of the Journal of Applied Psychology.

From where I stand, 5 feet, 8 1/2 inches tall in my stocking feet, that sounds delightful. The average woman is a shade less than 5 foot 4. So by my calculations, I should be $3,550.50 ahead every year, more if I wear high heels.

Being tall comes in handy, because you don't need a step ladder to change a light bulb and you can see over smaller people when watching a parade. The study says height is a leg up at work too, because folks tend to look up to people professionally when they also look up to them physically.

Judge and Daniel Cable, a business professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, analyzed four large-scale studies - three in the United States and one in Britain - which followed thousands of participants from childhood to adulthood, examining details of their work lives.

The researchers didn't consider such variables as intelligence, talent and work ethic. Instead they focused on objective measures, such as salary and sales volume, and subjective factors, such as performance evaluations.

They found that salespeople and managers who are tall fared exceptionally well. But even tall people who work in solo settings or from home tend to be more highly valued at raise time. And the findings were as strong for tall people in their 20s just beginning careers as it was for highly experienced tall workers in their 40s and beyond.

Their conclusion: Tall people are more confident, a trait that helps them to command respect.

On my best days, I have enough confidence for three people. Although some height increase would help. I know I could never take pills to get taller though! Now I know thats thanks to leggy parents and not the passion I've put into honing my skills.

Truth to tell, I find these findings more than a little disconcerting, even though I'm getting the long end of the stick. After all, some of my best friends are short people - and many of them, praise be, are successful.

The measure of a man should not be whether he stands taller than the national average of 5 feet 9 inches. More importantly, the notion that people are rewarded on the basis of their appearance sends a scary message.

If you really want to get ahead in the workplace, perhaps you should immediately add two inches to your height. You also should refrain from growing old, gaining weight or losing your hair.

For the purposes of some of the discussions here, you're qualified as
short if you receive HD (Height Discrimination).  This is when unkind
presumptions are made about you - your character, intelligence,
competence and bravery - based on your height.  It's the act of
regarding a person as a lessor because they are smaller.

If you want examples of this, a couple of regular trollers will
probably help us out.  They like to spend time trying to make smaller
people feel bad about themselves.

This one is a perfect example.  The main issue regarding small teachers, especially for very young children, is one of etiology, and
has nothing to do with the proferred answers in this poorly drafted
poll.  Many of us believe that size or lack of height is, at it's core,
neurological and, as Kenneth Kidd, Ph.D., has found, one CANNOT become
a short person without the "proper" genetics.  If this is the case, then
there is no reason whatsoever that a short or taller man should not be able to
become a teacher, providing he or she is effective in the classroom.

Others, however, believe that the reason that size runs in
families is that children "learn" smallness from others, and become
short themselves.  If this is true, then there is a very good
argument that smalls should not be allowed to teach, or be
caregivers for, young children.  This is a chilling idea, but is a
natural consequence of the theory that how tall you are is not learned behaviour.

As or right now this site holds the only known answer to gaining height without the uses of medicines or exercises, that's just a fact of life!

I know, I know. Life isn't fair.

But wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a world that fosters confidence, a place in which everyone stands tall, regardless of his height? Or weight? Or age? Or ethnicity?

Imagine taking the high road and judging each individual on his or her own merits.
Now that's a lofty ideal.

Question

Dear Sir,
My name is James. I am 19 years, 9 months old. My problem is I am very short for my age. I am on 5'4. My younger sister who is only 11 years old is almost as tall as me. My father is 5'10, and my mother is 5'0. Now I want a way to grow 7 to 9' inches taller, which would be better for my self esteem and help give me a competetive edge. I don't know how to do that. Can you please give me some advice of how I can grow naturally, 7' to 9 inches taller in about 1 year. I would really appreciate that.

Please respond back

                              Sincerely,  James

Answer

Dear James,

The only thing I can help grow that much  taller is flowers...human beings are a lot harder!

There is not any natural product or activity that you can do which will safely increase your height  by the amount you would like at the rate that you want (I would suggest you also discuss this with your doc, and have him or her give you a check up).

You are, by the way, still growing, so don't think that you have reached your final height, yet. Sorry, but there is no precise method. The only way we know is the TIME method, this may give you around 2-3 inches at best. There is no way to predict your final height Eating healthy and exercising regularly are the key steps to getting the most out of your body and mind.
